영어원서 독서지수 내가 읽고 있는 영어원서가 쉬운 책인지, 어려운 책인지 어떻게 알 수 있을까? 미국에서 개발된 독서지수를 참고하면 자신이 읽고 있는 원서의 난이도를 체크할 수 있다. 미국의 온라인서점 아마존에서는 각 책에 대한 정보를 Inside This Book 카테고리에 New-Text Stats에서 볼 수 있도록 링크하였다. 현재 모든 영어원서에 대해 이런 통계를 제공하는 것은 아니기 때문에, 아마존에서 자신이 읽고 있는, 또는 읽으려고 하는 원서의 제목을 입력하고 Inside This Book-New-Text Stats에서 관련 정보를 확인하여야 한다.

Text Stats(텍스트 통계) The Text Stats feature calculates a variety of statistics for each book in the Search Inside!™ program. The Readability calculations estimate how easy it is to read and understand the text of a book. (텍스트 통계의 숫자는 Inside 프로그램 검색에서 나오는 각 책의 다양한 통계를 계산하고 있다. 독서지수 계산은 책의 텍스트를 읽고 이해하는 것이 얼마나 쉬운지를 추정치로 보여준다.)
The Fog Index was developed by Robert Gunning. It indicates the number of years of formal education required to read and understand a passage of text. (포그 지수는 로버트 쿤닝에 의해 개발되었다. 이 지수는 문장을 읽고 이해하는데 필요한 정규교육연수를 나타낸다.)
The Flesch Index, developed in 1940 by Dr. Rudolph Flesch, is another indicator of reading ease. The score returned is based on a 100 point scale, with 100 being easiest to read. Scores between 90 and 100 are appropriate for 5th and 6th graders, while a college degree is considered necessary to understand text with a score between 0 and 30. The Flesch-Kincaid Index is a refinement to the Flesch Index that tries to relate the score to a U.S. grade level. For example, text with a Flesch-Kincaid score of 10.1 would be considered suitable for someone with a 10th grade or higher reading level.
